GETTING AROUND HONG KONG
Generally speaking, taxis are abundant in Hong Kong and it is usually possible to hail a taxi street side without the need to call for pick up. However, taxis are harder to catch when it's raining, during rush hour (between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM), during the 4:00 PM shift change and on horse-racing days (from September to May).
Taxi fares begin at HK$24; however, there are extra charges for trips through Aberdeen and the harbour tunnels, so make sure to take this into account when planning your journey.
BY MTR (SUBWAY)
The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is Hong Kong's popular and efficient subway and light rail system. The MTR can take you to just about every corner of the city and outlying areas. Fares range from as little as HK$4 all the way up to HK$46.50 each way.
However, by far the most cost effective way to travel on the MTR is the rechargeable Octopus smart cards. At a cost of HK$150 (with a refundable deposit of HK$50) the Octopus card is a staple of Hong Kong life, and can be purchased in any MTR station. From train journeys, ferry rides and even paying for your shopping, the Octopus card is a huge money and time saver.
Tourist Day passes are also available, offering unlimited travel for a one day period for HK$65.
